“Named after an old British slang term for “Black Guard” this Chapel Hill, NC outfit is manned by ex-Capsize 7 leader Joe Taylor who plays everything on this follow-up to 2017’s fourth LP Bitty Bop. That album found Taylor moving away from the noisy, guitar-led alt-rock of 2012’s Fresh Candy into more deliberate and atmospheric prog/space/folk rock; Luckery resumes that course with rerecorded, yet faithful renditions of three bitty songs. The mystical opener “Bitty Bop” tones down the LP version’s heavily distorted bass to accentuate its harpsichord-like, haunted house piano and Taylor’s recitative, mannered croon. On the spectral, militaristic “I the Storm,” Taylor tackles personal demons as spindly and squealy guitars, skittish programmed drums, and spooky robotic voices hover overhead, while the meditative and spiritual, slowly intensifying “Locked Into Me” finds him defiantly coming to grips with a painful death.”
