In 1999, 2000 and 2001 Chris Toms and Joe Taylor wrote and recorded an LP with Brian Paulson. During this time Joe was living in Saxapahaw which is outside Chapel Hill – and driving in to practice with Chris at Starpoint, infamous musician-centric house in Carrboro.
This recording is currently being mastered by Joe and will be available soon.
Lystra: Joe Taylor, Chris Toms.
In 2001 Joe and Chris moved from Chapel Hill, NC to Los Angeles to play as a duo and promote their music. Here is a three song demo they recorded in their practice room in N Hollywood. Pictured on the front steps are Chris Toms, Chris Rady and Joe Taylor. Chris later joined the band – he was playing the bass and this picture was taken during a practice.
Chacalaca (Pronounced “sha-ka-lah-ka”) was a three piece rock band which existed just long enough to record this 4-track demo. The band formed in 2005, and was the immediate precursor to Blag’ard . Based in Chapel Hill, it consisted of Joe Taylor on guitar and vocals, Billy Buckley on bass and backing vocals, and Saula Finau on drums.
The demo was found and mastered for the first time in the fall of 2016. ©2016 Pig Zen Space.

“Named after an old British slang term for “Black Guard” this Chapel Hill, NC outfit is manned by ex-Capsize 7 leader Joe Taylor who plays everything on this follow-up to 2017’s fourth LP Bitty Bop. That album found Taylor moving away from the noisy, guitar-led alt-rock of 2012’s Fresh Candy into more deliberate and atmospheric prog/space/folk rock; Luckery resumes that course with rerecorded, yet faithful renditions of three bitty songs. The mystical opener “Bitty Bop” tones down the LP version’s heavily distorted bass to accentuate its harpsichord-like, haunted house piano and Taylor’s recitative, mannered croon. On the spectral, militaristic “I the Storm,” Taylor tackles personal demons as spindly and squealy guitars, skittish programmed drums, and spooky robotic voices hover overhead, while the meditative and spiritual, slowly intensifying “Locked Into Me” finds him defiantly coming to grips with a painful death.”
